Canada: Self-determination |
|
||||||
|
Canada has
two main self-determination issues: ·
Quebec ·
First Nations Quebec ·
Nature of conflict – political-cultural ·
Status – dormant ·
Territorial opinion – significant minority in favor of independence ·
Notes: In some scenarios, Quebecois separatism could lead to violence.
First
Nations ·
Nature of conflict – political-cultural ·
Status – mostly latent ·
Territorial opinion – focused on cultural and local issues ·
Notes: Canada’s First Nations—indigenous Indians and Inuit—are widely
dispersed within the country. Though
there have been recent militant episodes, there is no true separatist self-determination
movement. Nunavut is a large, predominantly
First Nation territory, but has too small a population to be a viable
nation-state.
